Traditional Japanese trim designs are typified by features such as colours, designs and motifs, which are used to convey various messages or themes.
Nature plays a dominant role in Japanese design in line with Shinto and Buddhist beliefs about the importance of harmony with nature.
Rivers and the sea are popular symbols with water, or waves, signifying power and resilience. Clouds are used represent elegance and high status. Floral designs feature strongly these are often reduced to simple line drawings. Cranes are used to represent good fortune and longevity.
Lines of different thicknesses and gaps are used to make a variety of patterns used all-over, in patches or for borders.
